Artist Story | Katsukawa Shunsen (also known as Shunko II) was a prominent Japanese artist and an influential print and book designer working in the early 19th century. Early in his career, he excelled in the ukiyo-e tradition, creating woodblock prints and book designs that showcased a plethera of intricate techniques. Ukiyo-e printing involved carving separate wooden blocks for each colour, a meticulous process requiring exceptional skill.
Shunsen studied classical Japanese painting under Tsutsumi Torin III and Katsukawa Shunei, eventually adopting the name "Katsukawa" as a nod to his mentor. As his career progressed, Shunsen, like many artists of his time, transitioned to a new medium, focusing on painting ceramics. This shift demonstrated his versatility and willingness to explore diverse artistic forms.
