Artist | Leo Gestel
Artist Story | Leo Gestel was a Dutch Modernist painter whose eclectic style spanned a variety of mediums and art movements, including Cubism, Expressionism, Futurism, and Post-Impressionism. Despite the dramatic shifts in his artistic approach, his enduring passion for portraiture remained evident throughout his career.
Gestel rose to prominence alongside fellow artist Piet Mondrian when they joined the Parisian avant-garde. Unfortunately, many of Gestel's works were destroyed in a studio fire in 1929, twelve years before his passing. Considering the diversity and talent in his surviving pieces, one can only imagine the lost masterpieces.
Artwork Narrative | The artwork, 'Three Horses' by Leo Gestel, is a striking example of his modernist style. The composition captures three elegant horses depicted in fluid, dynamic brushstrokes. The bold yet minimalist technique emphasises the power and grace of the animals, creating a sense of motion. Gestel’s contemporary brushwork conveys both energy and refinement, highlighting his skill for blending abstraction with recognisable forms.
