Artist | Itō Jakuchū

Artist Story | Itō Jakuchū was a Japanese painter of the mid-Tokugawa period. Renowned for drawing flowers, fish and birds, considered traditional Japanese subjects to depict at the time, his work displays modern stylistic elements using interesting and unusual perspectives. Often the foliage Jakuchū created bore signs of perforation, animal damage or decay - reflecting the idea of Memento Mori in his artworks. Memento Mori is an artistic symbol that reminds us of the inevitability of death and the fragility of life. Jakuchū was deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism, which is evidenced in his more subdued, monochrome ink paintings.

Long dismissed as too eccentric in his style, Itō Jakuchū’s work did not garner recognition outside of Japan until the 20th century, but today he is revered as one of the Edo period's most innovative painters.

Artwork Narrative | This set of 4 Ishizuri-e prints are both minimalistic and captivating. The elegance of the artwork shines through Jakuchū's masterful use of fine line work, intricate details, and striking negative space. Each composition shows his fascination with the life cycle of nature, highlighting the ephemeral and enduring beauty found in natural forms.
