Artist | Stephen Redpath
Artist Story | I am a landscape artist, based in rural Aberdeenshire, northeast Scotland. My watercolour paintings explore the relationship between emotion and the wild and remote places where I have been fortunate to spend much of my life, initially as an ecologist and now as an artist.
In my paintings, I strive to express how landscape affects my emotional state, and in turn how my emotional state affects how I paint the landscape. I do this in a very intuitive way. I start by spending time walking, sketching, photographing and increasingly simply opening the senses and allowing the feel of these landscapes to soak into my bones. Then I return to the studio, put the sketchbooks and photos away and take time to allow those landscapes to re-emerge as they see fit. The whole thing is thrilling.
Artwork Narrative | An abstract composition that brilliantly utilises negative space, inviting the viewer to interpret the scene in their own way. The undulating line suggests a jagged horizon, beautifully rendered in shades of khaki green, soft grey, jet black, and a striking touch of blue.
