Artist | László Moholy-Nagy

Artist Story | László Moholy-Nagy, born in 1895 in Borsód, Hungary, was a multifaceted artist. Captivated by technology and its impact on humanity, he believed art could drive social change. Moholy-Nagy viewed the integration of art, technology, and education as essential for meaningful communication.

Renowned for his minimalist and striking abstract compositions, he worked across numerous mediums, with particular focus on geometric forms. Beyond painting, he was an influential educator, writer, and photographer. From 1923 to 1928, he taught at the Bauhaus School of Art in Weimar and Dessau, where he co-edited the Bauhaus Books series with Walter Gropius and collaborated with Herbert Bayer on the school’s typographic materials.

Though he continued to paint, publish lithographs, and experiment with photomontage, photography became central to his practice. By using unusual perspectives, he found new expressive power in the medium, challenging the viewer.

Artwork Narrative | Moholy-Nagy explored dynamic compositions and innovative angles in his photography, broadening the camera's expressive potential. This is evidenced by a striking photograph taken from atop the Marseille Transporter Bridge, where he captured the intricate view below. The overlapping dark metal beams contrast sharply with a circular concrete pillar, creating a compelling industrial scene. The two triangular white sails of a small ship passing below draw the viewer's eye, guiding it through the dramatic, complex scene and grounding the photograph in reality - preventing it from becoming a purely abstract art piece.
