Born Edward James Muggeridge in Kingston upon Thames, he later changed his name to Eadweard Muybridge, believing it reflected original Anglo-Saxon roots. Muybridge first traveled to the United States as a young man and gained international recognition in 1868 for his striking large-format photographs of Yosemite Valley, California. His most groundbreaking work came in the 1870s when he used sequential photography to analyse animal and human movement, laying the foundation for the development of motion pictures.
