Artist Story | Born in 1880, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist known for his painting and printmaking, characterized by vivid colors, dynamic compositions, and bold, expressive brushwork. In 1905, Kirchner along with Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, founded the artists' group Die Brücke (The Bridge.) The groups' aim was to “bring life and art into harmony” and the movement is often considered the birth of German Expressionism.
